and they, as much as the clergy, deserve our regular prayers. HOW IS THE PARISH FINANCED? The Church of England is one of the biggest landowners in the country. It has huge capital assets. But the income it receives is now used almost entirely to meet the rapidly increasing cost of clergy pensions. This means that parishes must meet their own running costs, including the cost of having their own vicar. There are no outside funds to draw upon. The annual running costs of this parish are now approaching £100K. To be more precise, we have to find over £1,800 per week, simply in order to pay our way. This sum does not include any of the cost we face in maintaining and restoring the fabric of our church buildings. That is an additional burden that we have to bear, without the availability of any central government support. Facts of this kind present a pretty stark picture. With church, as with many other aspects of community life, the reality is, 'use it (and pay for it), or lose it'. Without the pledged and sustained support of our church members we cannot hope to survive. And with around 120 adults attending church each Sunday it is easy to work out the kind of burden that this actually places upon us. Undeniably it is a heavy burden.
